“Ladles”- Drifter’s Chili

If there was a Chili's Anonymous, I'd be a lifelong member!

Given the fact I can’t draw any better than a first grader (if that), the only way I can relate to an artist staring at a bare canvas is when I stare into my pantry ready to create a new homemade chili!

I’ve been accused of having tunnel vision when I run, well… if they only could see me in the kitchen building my chili! Like a witch over her cauldron, I won’t let anybody near, let alone taste, my special potion until it has simmered and the flavors have matured over a low flame.

(My resume includes First Place Winner of the best chili of Boy Scout Troop 222! How many years ago?…..not sayin’):)

“Ladles”- Sweet Potato and Cabbage Soup

Hit the jackpot on a winter's night with one of my absolute favorite soups EVER!

A year ago my son gave me the Moosewood Restaurant cookbook, Simple Suppers, for Christmas. This recipe originated from this cookbook with a few tweaks and additions.

I urge you to try it even if you aren’t a huge fan of sweet potatoes or cabbage. This Indonesian flavored soup is savory (garlic and ginger root!), slightly spicy (cayenne!), bizarre (peanut butter!) and creamy (there’s NO cream!). Serve as a fancy shmancy fine dining course OR at halftime of the Super Bowl to sober up the crowd. Your guests will think they’re dreamin’!

Don’t be ashamed to lick your spoon- I did!

“Ladles”- Lentil and Sausage Gumbo

No better time than winter for one pot meals served with a ladle.

Hearty soups feed the soul. Cheating is encouraged! Nobody cares if you chopped all fresh, organic vegetables or threw in a generic brand of frozen peas and carrots.

Comfort food doesn’t have to be mac and cheese or mashed potatoes. Protein doesn’t have to be a slab of meat. One pot to wash and leftovers that taste even better the next day!
