Around the year 2000, my mother was diagnosed with a progressive illness called multiple system atrophy. It started with severe bouts of hypotension (low blood pressure) and progressed to the point she could not walk or take care of herself. It was heartbreaking. My father, her husband of 52 years, knew this might just be the biggest fight he would ever endure. Sid was born a leader. No doubt in my mind. Some people naturally have less fear when the gun goes off. The best leaders have that sixth sense, an intuition.

The best advantage of being the child of a great leader is witnessing the actions and behaviors that come from that intuition. Over time I began to predict what he would do–this is a sign I was developing the intuition myself. Some Dads take their kids bowling or fishing. My Dad took me to meet judges in their chambers:).

My grandfather, Sid’s father, had Alzheimer’s. My father barely attended law school because of his ill father. He was an only child and his mother needed help. After he died, my father and grandmother needed a way to make money so my grandmother used her skills in the kitchen to run a restaurant and later own a boarding house for boys. As many people do, Sid learned about money by not having any.

As you know, schools would rather teach us about “x’s” and “y’s” than “dollars” and “cents.” In my home, we talked and learned about money. Here are a few money lessons that most impacted my life. Read more

Not your ordinary wedding video

The year was 1985. The year I got married. Camcorders just came out on the market. Not the kind of camcorders you and I are familiar with now. Think of the largest, heaviest hand held camcorder you’ve ever seen. Now think of a VCR machine.  Now strap both around your neck and you’ll have a better feel of what a “camcorder” was in 1985.

With the help of a close buddy and a long time radio host in Kansas City, my father was the “executive producer” of a video for my wedding reception. My husband and I appeared at the beginning and end of the video without a clue of what was in the middle. Read more

Persistence is not always about head banging and spinning your wheels.

Don’t forget the down escalator.  

No question persistence is vital to a successful outcome in a negotiation. The relentless pursuit of a goal.

Frequently when we fire ourselves up to fight our own battles we end up hitting a brick wall.  We get discouraged and give up.  The closer we are to reaching the goal when we hit the wall, the more likely we are to feel defeated.

Next time you’re banging your head against the wall, remember “The Escalator.”  Picture yourself in a department store with both up and down escalators, usually close to each other.

The Mindset of the Negotiator  

The 3 key “negotions” (a term I coined to mean specific “emotions” in a negotiation):

Sincerity.  Nothing, I mean nothing, is more important in a negotiation than sincerity.  When you are sincere, you are believable.  You build trust.  You are not out to hurt or harm but to reach a goal.  You create an aura of team spirit with a win-win mentality.

Enthusiasm.  “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,” said Ralph Waldo Emerson.  Act with enthusiasm.  Exude passion.  Show conviction.

Urgency.  Don’t waste time.  Strike while the iron is hot.  Urgency IS an emotion.  It is heard in your voice.  If you don’t think urgency affects outcomes, look at what happens after the 2 minute warning in a football game when the losing team is down by 2 points. Read more
