Seasoned Wild Salmon Burgers
Available at Costco in the frozen food section. These are a great alternative to beef burgers, low in saturated fat, high in omega 3’s. Think of good fats, as found in salmon, as the oil your body needs to run smoothly. There is real danger in not having enough good fats in your diet. Years ago, before I knew any better, I cut back on ALL fats. I was eating incredible foods with loads of vegetables, proteins and fruits. I was losing weight, gaining muscle which was very rewarding. Only one problem. I was SO weak. It was an effort to get out of my car, no kidding. I kept thinking I was not eating enough protein so I became very mindful and increased my protein. Nothing changed. I was still working out but not recovering well. I remember thinking, “If this is what it feels like to be healthy, I’m not sure I want to be.” This went on for months. It turns out I had so little fat in my diet that it was causing a severe, debilitating weakness in my legs especially. Not wanting to give up on my mission to change my lifestyle, I knew I had to figure out what was missing from my diet. Soon thereafter I discovered it was FAT– the very thing I wanted to get rid of! I began cooking with some olive oil and choosing my meals so they included good fats while still keeping my saturated fat and trans fat intake as low as possible. I immediately felt the difference and haven’t turned back since. If food is our body’s fuel, good fats oil the engine. Without oil, the car doesn’t run. Keep that in mind.
What I love about these salmon burgers is that they are made from wild salmon (very important). They can be sautéed, broiled, or baked. They need no additional seasoning whatsoever. You can dress them as you would a hamburger or be adventurous and try wasabi sauce, hummus or pesto. Place the patty on a sprouted whole wheat (or gluten free) bun, serve with a side salad, and dinner is done! Voila!
