Not your ordinary wedding video

The year was 1985. The year I got married. Camcorders just came out on the market. Not the kind of camcorders you and I are familiar with now. Think of the largest, heaviest hand held camcorder you’ve ever seen. Now think of a VCR machine.  Now strap both around your neck and you’ll have a better feel of what a “camcorder” was in 1985.

With the help of a close buddy and a long time radio host in Kansas City, my father was the “executive producer” of a video for my wedding reception. My husband and I appeared at the beginning and end of the video without a clue of what was in the middle. Read more

Under the Covers: Mud, Sweat and Tears by Bear Grylls

Welcome to Under the Covers, an on-going series of book reviews to enrich the way we think, move, eat and connect.

In my Under the Covers book series, I will rate each book based on its “Life Wisdom” value (from 1 to 5 wise owls). I will review books that inspire, motivate and teach life lessons. Some of our greatest wisdom comes from those whose journeys may be quite different from our own.

When we escape into their world, we can learn from their trials, tactics, and courage. Through their wisdom, we add to our own. Read more

ABsolutely Core Crazed- Part V

Planks reveal the truth about your core strength.

View previous posts in this series, ABsolutely Core Crazed.

You wouldn’t think that an exercise where you stay perfectly still could make so many body parts stronger.  There are many versions of the plank, many I will illustrate here. In a nutshell, you straighten your body like a board and hold it there.

This simple exercise works your entire core, back, quads, ankles, arms, shoulders, butt, and brain.  A stationary pose that looks so easy can be downright torturous!  It’s a hoot to see big, strong guys drop to their knees in agony when I challenge them in a plank contest.  I haven’t lost one yet!

If you promise to try these plank variations to improve your core strength, I’ll share a few of my secrets to holding a plank longer in my final post of this series next week.  Then make sure and write me when you challenge Hercules at the gym and win!

Sid’s Sense- The Escalator: Hitting the Wall

Persistence is not always about head banging and spinning your wheels.

Don’t forget the down escalator.

No question persistence is vital to a successful outcome in a negotiation. The relentless pursuit of a goal.

Frequently when we fire ourselves up to fight our own battles we end up hitting a brick wall.  We get discouraged and give up.  The closer we are to reaching the goal when we hit the wall, the more likely we are to feel defeated.

Next time you’re banging your head against the wall, remember “The Escalator.”  Picture yourself in a department store with both up and down escalators, usually close to each other.

Persistence sometimes requires you to use both. Read more

All Boggled

Are you choosing your family's priorities or are they choosing you?

Have you ever played the game, Boggle?  It is a word game that comes with a set of dice with letters on every side.  You place the letters in a container with a lid and shake.  The letters fall randomly in slots on the base and you try and create words out of adjoining letters.

So many families operate like a game of Boggle.  They throw tons of stuff in the container, shake everything up, see where things land on any given day, and then try to make sense out of the chaos, and of course, try to come out winners in everything they do by bedtime! Read more
