The Question to Command Your Life
What’s your metaphor for life? Is life a roller coaster? A series of ups and downs or an adrenaline rush thrill ride? Is life a journey, a marathon, or a dance? Is it a battle, a symphony or a three-ring circus?
Would that metaphor change if I asked you on your graduation or wedding day versus the day you lost your job?
Our outlook is constantly adjusting. Like a swivel chair, we’re busily twirling around and our emotions shift depending on what we’re facing at the moment. Then we compare what we see to what we want.
Is happiness really about meeting our own (or other’s) expectations? It’s like trying to hit a bulls eye with a moving target. There has to be a better way to “dance” through life.
The answer we want is “yes”. The question we need to keep asking is………..

Under the Covers: Life of Pi
In my Under the Covers book series, I will rate each book based on its “Life Wisdom” value (from 1 to 5 wise owls). I will review books that inspire, motivate and teach life lessons. Some of our greatest wisdom comes from those whose journeys may be quite different from our own.
When we escape into their world, we can learn from their trials, tactics, and courage. Through their wisdom, we add to our own.

Interpersonal Warfare- 5 Cease Fire Tactics You May Not Have Tried
My friend called me upset and angry. She had a blow out fight with her boyfriend and couldn’t get past the frustration that he wouldn’t comply with a simple request she made of him. The request wasn’t significant but his refusal was monumental.
My friend attached deep meaning to his turndown causing her heart to feel weighted. Not expecting his reaction turned her hurt into fury. Nothing will launch anger faster than being thrown for a loop. Read more

Top 12 Life Notions I Wish I Knew at 20
As I approach my 49th birthday, I wonder how many more life lessons I still have to learn the hard way. Those mishaps that could be prevented if I knew better.
Some of us grow up as sponges while others are bricks. Being hard headed isn’t always bad. You forgo the opportunity to leap frog over obstacles others previously conquered. Rather, you choose to face each adversity head on and figure out your own way. The sponge moves ahead faster but may be less equipped to deal with life’s curve balls.
If you’ve read my Sid’s Sense series, you certainly know I’ve lived as a sponge. Adding 49 years of life experience to that borrowed wisdom is what motivated me to share this list. After decades of discovery, here are few life notions I wish I knew when I was twenty. Read more

Words We Should(n’t) Live By

Protect yourself from potentially harmful clichés.
Clichés are so popular in America that there’s hardly a day you don’t say or hear one. I read hundreds of clichés in preparing this post and their value is apparent.
Used to validate, encourage, dismiss, or explain behavior, clichés are catchy language crutches that justify intention.
We need them. Their overuse is useful. Everyone knows what we mean without explanation. Listeners accept our word jingle as a condensed proclamation of our current state of affairs.
But watch out. Some clichés can be dicey. Read more

WAKE UP AMERICA! Dr. Neal Barnard
Who is Dr. Neil Barnard?
Dr. Neil Barnard is the President of the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine which began in 1985. An adjunct associate professor at George Washington University School of Medicine, he has authored 15 books and numerous scientific articles. His book, 21 Day Weight Loss Kick Start, was a New York Times bestseller.
Dr. Barnard is sympathetic to those who struggle with their dietary choices. He comes from generations of cattle ranchers in North Dakota. He has vivid memories of bringing cattle to slaughter. His father abandoned the ranching business to become a physician who treated diabetes.
As President of The Cancer Project, Dr. Barnard developed a team of instructors around the country to teach people about food and its effects on cancer.
Awarded a $350,000 grant from the National Institute of Health, he conducted a study of the effects of a low fat, vegan diet on diabetes. With the results published in peer reviewed journals, the diet proved to improve glycemic and lipid control better than the diet promoted by the American Diabetes Association.

Olympic Veterans Leave Lessons in London
Elite athletes today take enormous risks, pushing right to the edge in order to stand out and up onto a podium. So painful to watch a competitor’s life long dreams crushed in a split second. Equally impressive to witness miraculous victories such as Misty and Kerry’s victory over China in beach volleyball or our USA soccer team’s victory over Canada in overtime.
This year’s Olympic veterans spoke through their actions and attitudes. Leaving us with more than memories. If you want to win in the game of life, our veteran athletes can lead you to victory. Read more
